Your best bet would be to get an original, for honestly not much more. And for the scopes themselves, avoid the reproduction ones like the plague. But sending it in may be at least $500~ alone. You may want to get better photos and post it on the K98 forum.Īs for finding scope mounts for the rifle, this is the only US based company I know of that even makes the mounts If you’re good with your hands, you can order the mounts and file/machine them to fit the bases yourself, or send it in. The way I could see them being used is if the K98 was in SS hands, but that’d be clear as day with the totenkopfs they littered on their sniper rifles. I’m not going to call yours a fake, because I don’t know (maybe someone else does), but to see that on a standard K98 is very odd. The style you’ve got if I recall is a Mannlicher style sight base, which was rare in and of itself. There were the long and short slide releases, the high and low turret mounts, and the suhl claw mounts that were prominent even during WWI and before. K98s during the war were outfitted with many different styles of scope mounts. With that being said, you’re rifle is unique. If you want to shoot it and have it running good, then I’d send it to a gunsmith. If you only want a safe queen, then I wouldn’t send it to a gunsmith, because restoring it would only bring its value down further. So what you want is kind of a contradiction. Parts to buy: Repro stock, cleaning rod, sling, bayonet, claw mount, repro scope. Old new parts: Stock, rear sight base, rear sight spring Original Parts: Bolt assembly, reciever, barrel, barrel bands, magazine springs, front sight hood (not pictured) (these things are all serialed the same) Anyone got info on production marks/ reputable smiths who can restore this rifle? I know it would have been worth a lot in mint condition, but this is mostly something id like done for myself and to finish grandpas project. Id like to refinish the rifle so it looks how its supposed to and id like to make it a safe queen. Ordered a stock for it, so now it looks complete minus the claw mounts and scope. He kept it in the attic, it rusted, and then he proceeded to clean the rust with steel wool, gun oil, and probably solvents, removing a lot of the finish. Long story short, grandpa came into posession of a 98k sniper sometime long ago, moreso the "guts".
